The first time Inez Brown’s niece, Nancy Thompson, looked at her aunt’s artwork, she immediately saw her aunt’s artistic talent. Inez’s art was fantastic – an impressive collection of water color, collage, pastels, acrylic paint, ink, and other mixed media. The collection inspired Nancy to create The Artwork of Inez Brown, a black, hard-bound book with gold lettering as a Christmas gift to her aunt in December 2005. When Nancy presented her aunt with the book and said that her artwork belonged in a book that could be shared with others, Inez cried.

Since the initial book was made especially for Inez, Nancy is now working on Mrs. Brown’s Beauty – The Life and Art of Inez Brown. It is a book featuring 40 color reproductions of Inez’s artwork plus stories of her life, her struggles, and her discovery, at age 74, of her hidden artistic talent. Interwoven throughout the book are Inez’s beautiful artwork, family photographs, a family tree, and some of Inez’s special recipes.

The book highlights Inez’s family – four generations of African American women who passed on a legacy of strong family values, belief in the power of prayer, and a faith in God which carried Inez through every adversity she faced. Now this legacy is being passed on to her niece Nancy to share with future generations.

Nancy’s inspiration for writing the book also comes from reading about the lives of African American women folk artists Sister Gertrude Morgan and Nellie Mae Rowe.

Mrs. Brown's Beauty – The Life and Art of Inez Brown is scheduled for completion in 2008.
